It is the most advanced TBM available because it allows to excavate in the widest variety of rock mass conditions with a very high standard of safety. In fact, when excavating through rock with high values of UCS, the machine can operate like a gripper machine, but under the protection of the shield. When instead weak or very fractured rock is encountered (for example, along fault zones) this machine can operate like a normal single shield would.
